Eighty-five percent of us will spend some time flat on our back because of back pain--making it a major U.S. health problem.
Back pain has not been well understood or successfully treated under traditional medical care.
In more than 90% of patients with back pain, medical doctors are unable to identify the
cause of the
pain.
What's causing the pain?
Located behind each pair of vertebra are two facet joints which allow vertebrae to bend forward and backward. A water tight sack (not shown) surrounds each facet joint creating a "joint capsule" filled with lubricating fluid.
Abnormal facet joint motion results in irritation and inflammation of the joint. Intense pain can result when the resulting inflammation activates pain receptors in the facet joint and capsule. Painful muscle spasms are often present as the body attempts to protect the joint from excessive movement.
The importance of restricted facet joint motion as a cause of back pain is not recognized by most medical doctors due to a lack of training in spinal biomechanics. As a result, this common cause of back pain is frequently over looked and wrongly diagnosed.
Treatment
Effective treatment of back pain involves correcting the conditions causing the pain rather than attempting to mask the pain with drugs.
Activator treatments
safely decrease pain by increasing facet joint motion, decreasing muscle spasm, and reducing inflammation. You not only get rid of your back pain, but you're able to do it without the side effects and risks associated with prescription drugs or surgery.
We never twist your back, cause your joints to make unpleasant "cracking" sounds, or hurt you. You'll appreciate this sensitive approach to chiropractic care.
